James Harrison's nasty words could lead to trade

I want to preface this by stating that James Harrison is one of my favorite personalities on the Pittsburgh Steelers. His style of play and his tenacious approach to the game is a perfect fit for the city his calls his football home. But as far as his latest comments toward NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, he’s better off keeping his mouth shut or he might find himself traded.
Sure, Harrison was heavily fined for his hits last season, seemingly being singled out as the poster child of the new NFL rules on leading hits head first. Harrison’s problems with his words and his now full blow hatred for Goodell have stemmed from these fines and negative attention. Harrison was fined $100,000 for those illegal hits last season. Apparently if you mess with Harrison’s wallet you really tick him off. He had words for the commissioner back then, but what he was telling the Men’s Journal for their August Issue has gone beyond ridiculous.

"If that man was on fire and I had to piss to put him out, I wouldn't do it; I hate him and will never respect him."
-James Harrison on Roger Goodell

Harsh? Yeah, that kind of rhetoric is uncalled for and way over the top. That’s not the extent of the unkind words. Harrison also used other descriptive words to describe the commissioner, including an anti-gay slur, "stupid," "puppet" and "dictator.

Its statements like these that worry me, the Rooney’s hold so much respect in the NFL and from Goodell; I doubt they will tolerate his remarks. It was Dan Rooney that personally delivered the message to Goodell on his appointment to the commissioner’s position. In Pittsburgh, things like this are what they make examples from. Santonio Holmes was traded away last year for next to nothing, just to rein in the locker room. Could Harrison see a similar fate? I bet he does.

Harrison went as far as saying that had the Steelers won the Super Bowl last season, he would have whispered in Goodell's ear during the trophy ceremony: "Why don't you quit and do something else, like start your own league in flag football?"

His words are borderline childish. He also criticizes, Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi by calling them “clowns”, he named Houston's Brian Cushing as being “juiced out of his mind” in a tirade of rants where no man was safe.

Harrison even criticized his own teammates. He called out Rashard Mendenhall and Ben Roethlisberger for their performances in the Super Bowl loss. An extraordinary turn of events from Harrison who is not concerned in the least about locker room coherency, and that’s what will get him traded out of Pittsburgh. It doesn’t matter how beloved he is by the fans.

The Rooney’s won’t deal with such a destructive player on their team. I’m not calling for his to be shipped off, just yet, but it may be too late for Harrison to save himself and a decision already made. I very much doubt he is the kind of guy who apologizes.

His insults masked what could be considered valid points on player issues, including safety.

He did go on and talk about how non-guaranteed contracts make players more likely to hit high, because in the short term, a torn knee ligament is more costly than a concussion. Harrison also suggests the real way to prevent head injuries is to shorten the season to 14 games, start off-season workouts later and trim the length of training camp so "we're not bangin' heads so much in August; that's where the brain trauma comes from."

God Bless a man who speaks what’s on his mind, but he needs to hire a publicist.
